OVERVIEW

A selection of animated illustrations that I created for clients and school projects. This series was created in 2016-2017 and includes:
  • Secret Garden (VFS)
  • Biologic Lecture (EBME Inc)
  • CHF Patients Education (iUGO Care)
I would like to share my process of these projects one by one.

SECRET GARDEN

I had an opportunity to take a motion graphic class in Digital Design course at VFS and as a school assignment, I created this project inspired by a parody novel, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”. I wanted to recreate a classic novel “The Secret Garden” with horror elements.

I started by writing a story synopsis and as I was writing it, I decide to use metaphors to tell the story (i.e Opening of a mansion door as Mary arriving her uncle’s house).  Once the synopsis is finalised, I moved to sketching and defining art direction.

TREATMENT

I created one of the scenes in Illustrator to see how the art direction was working. I liked the decorative elements of it, but I found that the colours were too muddy. I adjusted colours to make the colours more contrasting and less muddy and used gaussian blur for light and cloud in After Effects.

When each illustrated scene was completed, I pulled all the files and added animation in After Effects. Scale, position and trim path were mostly used for object transitions.

BIOLOGIC LECTURE

My role for this project was interpreting biologic medication and the immune system to comprehensive visual language to empower patients. Since the target audience of this project is mostly patients, I avoided using information and visuals that are too complex. My goal was to generate a content that is easy for viewers to understand without a medical background.

I have been working with EBME several times and created a number of lectures about immunology and allergy. I’ve gained some basic knowledge about immunology and allergy and am able to translate medical information visually.  However, when there is an area that I am not familiar with, I have to ask questions to doctors, specialists, and nurses as I am not a formally trained in the medical field.  After gaining a full understanding of what I need to create, I made a storyboard and created assets in Illustrator.

ASSETS

When assets for each illustration is completed, I animate them in After Effects.

CHF PATIENT RESOURCE

I created a set of educational illustrations for congestive heart failure patients, which will be used in iUGO Care’s patient mobile app. For this particular project, the client was very specific what should be in the illustrations and wanted to use their own brand colours.

iUGO BRAND COLORS

We wanted to create illustrations that are not only educational but also entertaining. For that reason, I was trying to achieve the look and the animation as whimsical as possible. Without further delay, I jumped to make the assets in Illustrations without doing sketches this time. Instead, I experimented different compositions in Illustrator.

COMPOSITION EXPERIMENT

Once the client approved the assets, I animated them in After Effects.
